ORDERING FIRE FIGHTERS OFF WILSON AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR CGC has just received key e-mails concerning the Station Fire and the attempt to remove firefighters from Mt. Wilson as flames approached. Without those firefighters in place, Wilson could have easily become toast: ______ From: Mike McIntyre.... Sent: Sunday, August 30, 2009 3:18 PM Subject: ATTENTION I have been informed that Mt. Wilson will be hit and we are pulling out the firefighters till it blows over...if there are personnel up there tell them they should go out. Michael J. McIntyre, District Ranger Los Angeles River Ranger District.... ______ According to CGC's source, the above e-mail caused an uproar. Wilson and Harvard stakeholders immediately called high ranking officials to get the firefighters reinstated because of the importance of the communications and Observatory facilities. The uproar worked. We are told that the firefighters never actually left Wilson and "about an hour later the Mt. Wilson Fire Team was created to save the hill." This e-mail documents the about-face: ______ From: Mike McIntyre.... Sent: Sunday, August 30, 2009 4:04 PM Subject: Re: ATTENTION Okay...i guess what i was told is premature or actually changing on the fly.......they have reevaluated and are leaving some strike teams up there...and of course by the time i press the send button this could be wrong too...my apologies for the adrenalin rush. [The dots in this paragraph were included in the incoming e-mail -Ed.] Michael J. McIntyre, District Ranger Los Angeles River Ranger District.... |
