  ORDERING FIRE FIGHTERS OFF WILSON AT THE ELEVENTH HOUR

  CGC has just received key e-mails concerning the Station Fire and the attempt to remove firefighters from Mt. Wilson as flames approached.  Without those firefighters in place, Wilson could have easily become toast:

  Subject: ATTENTION

  I have been informed that Mt. Wilson will be hit and we are  pulling out the firefighters till it blows over...if there are   personnel up there tell them they should go out.

  According to CGC's source, the above e-mail caused an uproar.  Wilson and Harvard stakeholders immediately called high ranking officials to get the firefighters reinstated because of the importance of the communications and Observatory facilities.

  The uproar worked.  We are told that the firefighters never actually left Wilson and "about an hour later the Mt. Wilson Fire Team was created to save the hill."  This e-mail documents the about-face:

  Okay...i guess what i was told is premature or actually  changing on the fly.......they have reevaluated and are leaving   some strike teams up there...and of course by the time i press  the send button this could be wrong too...my apologies for the   adrenalin rush.  [The dots in this paragraph were included in   the incoming e-mail  -Ed.]
