Crest Highway (SR-2) Closed for Repairs
LA CANADA-FLINTRIDGE -- The California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans) announces that SR-2 from La Canada-Flintridge to
Islip Saddle (junction with Highway 39) will remain closed to the public
due to severe damage produced by the lack of vegetation on the
slopes due to the Station Fire last September and the recent heavy
rains. The highway is expected to reopen by late March.
The heavy rains during mid-January caused several mudslides
and road washouts along SR-2 in the Angeles National Forest. A
Caltrans damage assessment team has determined that the most significant
road washouts range between 50 to 110 feet along the highway and about 200
feet below it at some locations, making the highway unsafe and
impassable.
"Caltrans contractors will work to return the highway
to a safe condition," said Deputy District Director of
Maintenance Dan Freeman. "Unfortunately, it is very likely that mudslide and debris
flows could persist in the Station Fire burn area."
No access will be granted to SR-2 via La Canada
Flintridge. County roads leading to SR-2 may have restricted access, therefore
contractors or maintenance crews that need access facilities on Mt.
Wilson Road via SR-2 and those seeking county road information should
contact the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works at
626-458-5100.
