CANCER & ANGIOGENESIS
July 10, 2007
It tears my heart out every time I hear of a person struck with cancer. If you happen to have another announcement of a broadcaster struck with this awful disease, you might want to tag this little announcement with it:
The City of Hope in Duarte, CA has been able to prescribe a new cancer treatment approach along with traditional chemotherapy for some patients. It is called anti-angiogenesis. This drug prevents the cancer cells from calling for the production of new capillaries near the tumors. This prevents the cancer from building a network for its food/fuel supply, hence making the stressing of chemotherapy more effective in killing the cancer cells. This is out of clinical trials, but not yet in the Handbook of Standard Practices. Ask your oncologist about this new treatment to see if it is appropriate for you or a friend's cancer treatment.
Our Army son had a recurrance of primary brain cancer in November 2006. After 3 months of chemo, the cancer had still grown 1000X. However, after adding the anti-angiogenesis drug to the chemo, the cancer was almost totally gone in another 3 months. After 6 months of chemo plus anti-angiogenesis drug, he is essentially cancer free. Cancer cells are anerobic, and require 20X to 40X as much glucose to operate their functions. Denying their easy fuel supply further stresses them by limiting energy input they need to pump out the chemo poisons. Further, capillaries release an excess of human growth hormone, so preventing the capillary growth keeps this hormone out of the cancer, further assisting the treatment.
