ANOTHER RF APPROACH TO ALERT MOTORISTS |
Alertcast and Safety Cast are being joined by yet another company that proposes to warn motorists of the presence of emergency situations nearby. Once again, broadcast frequencies are being proposed, at least for the purposes of the initial demonstration event. The company is EVA LLC (Emergency Vehicle Alert, or "EVA"), and they have requested an Experimental Authorization, FCC file number 0175-EX-PL-2003.
Under EVA's plan, an emergency vehicle would switch on two unmodulated RF signals (about 175.0 and 179.0 MHz) with up to 40 watts ERP each. Only if both signals are detected by special low-cost receivers in nearby vehicles would the corresponding motorists receive an alert warning. EVA claims that the use of multiple RF signals constitutes a "fail safe circuit" that eliminates false alarms.
Obviously, the frequencies proposed for testing are well inside TV Channel 7's spectrum, but EVA is proposing to run their tests in Jefferson and Franklin Counties, Kentucky, where they claim CH-7 service is absent.
EVA's website <http://www.evallc.com> has more information, and the technical details are on file at the FCC. To view the details, see: https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/cf/els/reports/GenericSearch.cfm. Then, In the third box ("Applicant Name") type EVA (or eva). Now hit the "Start Search" button at page bottom.
We note that EVA's Experimental Application was filed on 8/12/03 and dismissed on 8/15/03 - a three day turnaround.
Thanks to Howard Fine for the tip on EVA.
